Climate

The three countries, located in West Africa, offer a wide variety of climates, from Mediterranean in northern Morocco to more desert-like in Mauritania and tropical in Senegal. Travellers can expect high temperatures, particularly in Mauritania and Senegal, where they can exceed 30°C in the hottest months. The best time to travel is generally during the cooler seasons, between November and February, when temperatures are more bearable. The climatic variations between these countries make for a rich and varied experience, but require good preparation, particularly in terms of appropriate clothing.

Currency

  • Morocco: The local currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, bureaux de change and some hotels. International bank cards are accepted in major cities and tourist areas.

  • Mauritania: The official currency is the Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU). Card payment facilities are limited outside the capital, Nouakchott, so it is advisable to carry cash in local currency.

  • Senegal: The CFA Franc (XOF) is the currency used. As in other countries, bank cards are accepted in major towns and tourist areas, but cash is still practical for small expenses.

Health

Travellers should take certain health precautions when travelling through these three countries. It is advisable to consult a health professional for any necessary vaccinations, such as yellow fever, especially for entry into Mauritania and Senegal. Access to drinking water may be limited, particularly in Mauritania, and it is advisable to drink bottled water to avoid water-borne diseases. Medical facilities vary from country to country, with more developed services in the larger towns.
